Applications are invited for the Imperial College President’s PhD Scholarship 2027, offering outstanding students from around the world the opportunity to undertake a fully funded PhD at Imperial College London. The scholarship is offered by Imperial College London, one of the world’s leading research universities, through its academic departments and the Imperial College Selection Panel. Successful scholars will work with an approved academic supervisor and have access to Imperial’s postgraduate research and professional development support.

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS

The Imperial College President’s PhD Scholarship provides:

·       Full tuition fee coverage for up to 3.5 years.

·       £26,500 annual stipend based on the 2026–27 rate to support living expenses.

·       £2,000 per year consumables fund for the first three years.

·       Bespoke opportunities and events through the Early Career Researcher Institute (ECRI).

·       Access to Imperial’s postgraduate support services and Graduate School professional skills programmes.

·       Additional support available to international and disabled postgraduate students.

·       Opportunity to conduct research under the supervision of an academic expert at Imperial College London.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Applicants must generally meet the following requirements:

·       The scholarship is open to talented candidates from all nationalities.

·       Applicants should be among the highest-achieving students in their undergraduate cohort.

·       Applicants must hold, or be expected to receive, a First Class UK undergraduate degree or equivalent.

·       Applicants with a standalone Master’s degree should normally have achieved a Distinction, or demonstrate evidence that they are on track to achieve one.

·       Applicants with multiple standalone Master’s degrees must have achieved a distinction in the qualification most relevant to their proposed PhD.

·       International qualifications must meet Imperial College London’s equivalent academic standards.

·       Applicants must have contacted an Imperial College London academic supervisor who has agreed to supervise their proposed research project.

·       Currently registered Imperial PhD students are not eligible; the scholarship is intended for new PhD applicants.

AVAILABLE PROGRAMS

The scholarship supports PhD research programmes across Imperial College London’s academic departments and research fields.

Applicants should identify a suitable PhD programme and research area that matches their academic background and research interests. The proposed research must have an academic supervisor at Imperial who is willing to supervise the project.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Applicants should prepare the documents required for the PhD admission application, which may include:

·       Academic transcripts and degree certificates.

·       Evidence of academic qualifications or predicted results.

·       Research proposal or details of the proposed research project, where required.

·       Academic references.

·       Curriculum vitae (CV).

·       Personal statement or supporting statement, where required.

·       Evidence of English-language proficiency, where applicable.

·       Information concerning the proposed Imperial College supervisor.

·       Any additional documents required by the relevant academic department.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

To apply for the Imperial College President’s PhD Scholarship:

1.     Identify a suitable PhD programme and research area at Imperial College London.

2.     Contact an appropriate academic in the relevant department and obtain their agreement to supervise your proposed research.

3.     Prepare the required academic and supporting documents.

4.     Submit your PhD admission application through Imperial College London’s online admissions system.

5.     Ensure that your application clearly demonstrates your academic excellence and research potential.

6.     The relevant academic department will review eligible candidates and shortlist outstanding applicants.

7.     Shortlisted candidates will be presented to the Imperial College Selection Panel.

8.     The Selection Panel will make the final scholarship decisions based on academic excellence and research potential.

9.     Successful candidates will receive written confirmation of their scholarship.

Applicants should apply early because they must secure agreement from an eligible supervisor before submitting their application.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The selection process takes place in two main stages. First, eligible applications are assessed by the relevant academic department, which selects the strongest candidates. Shortlisted candidates are then considered by the Imperial College Selection Panel, consisting of senior research leadership from across the College.

Up to 50 scholarships are available. The scholarship is highly competitive and is intended for exceptional candidates with outstanding academic records and significant potential to contribute to their chosen research field.

The scholarship is for new PhD applicants and should not be confused with general Master’s scholarships at Imperial College London.
