The scholarships are offered by Victoria University (VU) in partnership with Australia's Research Training Program (RTP). They support high-quality research and are awarded competitively based on academic merit and research potential. Additional research scholarships, including the Tony Kruger Education for Social Justice Research Scholarship, are also available for eligible candidates.

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS

Successful applicants for the RTP Stipend Scholarship – International may receive:

·       Full tuition fee coverage through an RTP Fee Offset Scholarship.

·       Living allowance of AU$35,707 per year based on the 2026 rate.

·       Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for single cover.

·       Opportunity to undertake research at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia.

·       Financial support for the duration specified under the relevant research scholarship.

The Tony Kruger Education for Social Justice Research Scholarship offers:

·       AU$40,707 annual stipend based on the 2026 rate.

·       Tuition fees covered through the RTP.

·       Overseas Student Health Cover for single cover.

·       Support for eligible doctoral research focused on social justice in education.

Important: The scholarship does not generally cover expenses such as English-language testing, bridging or English-language programs, or travel costs from overseas.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

To be considered for an international research scholarship at Victoria University, applicants must:

·       Be a citizen of a country other than Australia or New Zealand.

·       Meet Victoria University's academic entry requirements for a research degree.

·       Meet the University's English-language proficiency requirements.

·       For the RTP Stipend Scholarship – International, have a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) or Honours year grade equivalent to H1 (85% or above on the VU scale) in the most recent eligible qualification.

·       Be commencing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research degree.

·       Nominate a suitable Research Focus Outline as part of the application.

·       Enrol as a full-time student.

Priority may be given to applicants who have not previously obtained a PhD and those who have not previously held certain Australian research scholarships.

Victoria University notes that the scholarship round is highly competitive and estimates that applicants may need an equivalent of 85–90 on the VU grading scale to be competitive for a PhD stipend scholarship.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The Victoria University International Research Scholarships 2027 are highly competitive, and meeting the minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee a scholarship. The number of stipend scholarships available depends on the University's available funding and the quality of applications received.

International applicants who do not qualify for one of the specific fully funded research scholarships may also be considered for the VU Global Research Scholarship, which provides a 20% tuition fee reduction for the duration of an eligible research degree.

Applicants should also note that the AU$35,707 stipend is the 2026 rate published by Victoria University and may be updated for 2027.
