The Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative (DAFI) is a tertiary education scholarship programme supported by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in partnership with education stakeholders in different countries. In Rwanda, the programme supports refugee students to access higher education while promoting academic success, skills development, and community engagement.

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS

The scholarship package varies depending on the country but may cover:

·       University tuition fees

·       Study materials and academic supplies

·       Food allowance

·       Transportation support

·       Accommodation expenses

·       Other educational support required for successful completion of studies

The scholarship supports programmes classified under:

·       ISCED Level 6: Bachelor’s degree programmes or equivalent qualifications

·       ISCED Level 5: Short-cycle tertiary education programmes, including accredited Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes of two years or more leading to a diploma or certification

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

·       Must be a recognized refugee or asylum seeker living in Rwanda

·       Must have achieved strong academic performance, with priority given to applicants with excellent academic results

·       Must have received admission to a recognized university or higher education institution in Rwanda

·       Must provide proof of university admission or acceptance

·       Only one member per family can receive the DAFI Scholarship to ensure equal access to opportunities among refugee students

·       Must not currently benefit from another higher education scholarship programme

·       Must not have been confirmed for resettlement to a third country

AVAILABLE PROGRAMS

The DAFI Scholarship supports:

Undergraduate Degree Programmes

·       Bachelor’s degree programmes in recognized universities and higher education institutions in Rwanda

·       Equivalent first-degree qualifications

Short-Cycle Tertiary Education Programmes

·       Accredited Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes

·       Programmes lasting two years or more leading to diplomas or professional certifications

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

Applicants must upload the following documents with their application:

·       UNHCR proof of registration as a refugee or asylum seeker

·       Official or certified copy of high school diploma

·       University admission letter or proof of acceptance from a university in Rwanda

·       Equivalence certificate issued by the Ministry of Education of the country of asylum

The DAFI Scholarship Programme has supported thousands of refugee students worldwide by expanding access to higher education and developing future professionals and community leaders.

In Rwanda, more than 600 refugee students have benefited from the DAFI Scholarship, enabling them to pursue university education and develop skills that contribute to their communities.

Selected scholars are expected to maintain good academic performance and participate in community engagement and skills development activities during their studies.
