MA IN AFRICAN SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES
Applications are now open for the MA in African Sustainable Communities, a unique multidisciplinary program designed for students from around the globe who are passionate about sustainable development and community transformation in Africa. As the 21st century continues to bring rapid economic, political, and social changes across the continent, this program prepares students to navigate challenges and contribute meaningfully to long-term community initiatives. The program is offered at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), where the African Studies program has earned an international reputation for excellence. Hosted within the university’s African Studies framework, the program combines academic rigor with practical engagement. Students complete two semesters of intensive study at BGU in Israel, followed by field-based research and/or internship experience in Africa.
SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS
Financial support is available to ensure that qualified global talent can access this high-level education:
· Full and partial scholarships are available for qualifying candidates.
· Accommodation at the Marcus Campus dormitories is provided based on availability, offering a vibrant and supportive student community.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Applicants must:
· Hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
· Submit all mandatory application materials.
· Complete written assignments as part of the evaluation process.
· Participate in an online interview (via Zoom).
AVAILABLE PROGRAMS
The MA in African Sustainable Communities is a year-and-a-half-long program (three semesters, plus additional write-up time for Thesis Track students).
The program offers two tracks:
Applied Track – Designed for most students, focusing on practical community initiatives and professional engagement.
Thesis Track – Designed for students pursuing in-depth academic research.
Sample Courses Include:
· Deconstructing Development: Theory, Practice and Critique
· Project Workshop
· Economics, Politics and Society in Africa of the 20th Century
· Sports and Development in Africa
· Considering Sustainable Design Projects in Africa
· Resilience – The Art of Disaster Management and Coping
· Youth in Africa
· Rubbish and Shit: An Introduction to Discard Studies
All students complete mandatory core classes, research methods training, project workshops, and electives based on their interests.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
Applicants must submit all mandatory application materials through the official registration portal. These documents generally verify:
· Academic qualifications and transcripts
· Proof of degree completion
· Writing samples or academic essays
· Identification documents

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
- Online Registration: Submit the application through the official registration website and upload all required documents.
- Fee Payment: Pay the registration fee to initiate the review process.
- Interview: Attend a personal interview via Zoom once the application is reviewed.
- Notification: Receive official notification of acceptance or rejection.
- Finalization: If accepted, pay the remaining deposit and begin the visa process.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The program structure is uniquely divided between Israel and Africa. Students complete two semesters of intensive coursework at BGU in Israel. In the third semester, students relocate to Africa to conduct research or participate in a professional internship or community initiative, with continuous academic supervision and support from program staff.
