FULL SCHOLARSHIP AT CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY AFRICA (CMU-AFRICA)

Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa) is a branch of Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania, USA, located in Kigali, Rwanda. It was established in 2011 as part of a partnership between CMU and the Rwandan government to address Africa's technology and engineering talent gap. CMU-Africa offers graduate programs in Information Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence, with a focus on skills applicable to the continent’s unique challenges.
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa) provides high-achieving, financially disadvantaged students from Africa with access to quality graduate education in fields like Information Technology and Electrical and Computer Engineering. This program is part of the Mastercard Foundation’s mission to prepare young African leaders who will drive economic and social change in their communities and the continent as a whole.

AVAILABLE PROGRAMS:
• Master of Science in Information Technology,
• Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering,
• Mater of Science in Engineering Artificial Intelligence.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
To be eligible for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at CMU-Africa, applicants must:
• Be a citizen of an African country.
• Demonstrate financial need.
• Show strong academic and leadership potential.
• Be committed to using their education to contribute to their communities
• Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or be in the final year of their bachelor’s program, and while there is no minimum GPA, our students have a strong undergraduate background.
In order to be considered for the Mastercard Scholarship, students must first be admitted to one of CMU-Africa's degree programs.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:
1. Essays: You must answer a few questions in an essay format on the online application portal and one video essay.
2. CV/Resume: You should upload your resume as a PDF file. The document uploaded should be at most two pages; additional pages will not be considered.
3. Recommendations: Once you access the online application, you will be required to enter the names, titles, and email addresses of your three referees.
• MSIT/MS EAI: The Admissions Team will contact your references as needed.
• MS ECE: Your referees will receive a link to the online recommendation form. They must complete and submit the recommendation online.
4. Academic transcripts: Unofficial transcripts showing grades awarded to all coursework up to date must be uploaded to the online application portal, and the school information must be entered. All the transcripts must be uploaded as individual files if you have completed multiple degrees. Upon admission, the Admissions Team will require an official hard copy of your transcripts sent by the Registrar of your Undergraduate institution.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP:
The application has to be done in two different steps:
1. Submit an online application. You must provide your personal information and required documents. The link is at the bottom of this page.
2. Complete competency tests that require you to do Duolingo English tests or submit Standardized tests like IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo English tests if you are a non-native English speaker.
NOTE: CMU-Africa covers Duolingo English test fees for all first-time applicants who submitted their applications before the early admission deadline of December 15.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:
October 1: The beginning of the application in all programs
December 15: Early admission deadline. To cover your competency test fees, submit your application by the early admission deadline of December 15 for CMU-Africa.
January 15: Final application deadline. Any application received after the early admission deadline will only be considered if submitted with a valid DET/IELTS/TOEFL.
