The University of Detroit Mercy offers a variety of merit-based scholarships for international undergraduate students applying for the 2025–26 academic year. These scholarships are designed to reward academic excellence and provide financial assistance to help students manage the cost of their education in the United States. To be eligible, applicants must submit a complete application, demonstrate strong academic performance, and meet English language proficiency requirements. Scholarship awards are renewable and disbursed evenly across the academic terms, ensuring ongoing support throughout the student’s course of study.

SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS
• Tuition award of up to $10,000 per academic year.
• Scholarship is renewable for up to four years.
• Award is divided equally between Fall and Winter terms.
• No separate application is required (automatic consideration upon admission).
• Cannot be combined with other university tuition discounts or grants.
• Commerce Academic Scholarship offers up to $16,000 per year.
• Theatre Performance Scholarship may cover full tuition.
• Transfer students may receive up to $9,000 per year based on GPA.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
• Must be an international (non-U.S.) student.
• Must apply for an undergraduate (bachelor’s) degree program.
• Must enrol full-time (minimum credit load required).
• Must have a strong academic record (high school GPA).
• Must meet English language requirements:
o TOEFL iBT: minimum 80.
o TOEFL PBT: minimum 550.
o IELTS: minimum 6.5.
o Duolingo: minimum 105.
• No separate scholarship application required (automatic consideration).
• Cannot be combined with other university tuition discounts or grants.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
• High school transcripts (official and in English)
• Personal essay (around 250 words)
• One letter of recommendation
• Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, etc.)
• Copy of passport (photo page)
• Financial bank statement (not older than 3 months)
• Statement of Financial Support (if sponsored)
• Credential evaluation report (WES or ECE)
APPLICATION PROCEDURES:
• Choose your desired undergraduate program.
• Apply online via the university portal using the link at the bottom of this page.
• Pay the application fee (or request a fee waiver if eligible).
• Submit official high school transcripts (translated into English).
• Submit a personal essay (around 250 words).
• Submit one letter of recommendation.
• Submit English proficiency test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo).
• Submit a copy of your passport photo page.
• Submit a recent bank statement (not older than 3 months).
• Submit a Statement of Financial Support (if you have a sponsor).
• Submit a credential evaluation report (WES or ECE).
• Wait for the admission decision (usually within a few weeks).
• If accepted, confirm your admission and pay the enrolment deposit.
• Submit I-20 application and financial documents for visa processing. ( The I-20 is an official document from the university that proves you are accepted as a full-time student.)
• Pay the SEVIS fee and schedule your visa interview.
• Arrange travel and attend orientation before classes begin.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
• Health insurance is mandatory; university offers a plan or you can provide your own.
• Orientation programs are available to help international students adjust and understand visa rules.
• F-1 visa holders can work on-campus part-time (up to 20 hours per week).
• Off-campus work requires special authorization (OPT or CPT).
• On-campus and off-campus housing options are available; arrange early.
• Apply early to meet scholarship deadlines and allow time for visa processing.
• Prepare well for the F-1 visa interview with all required documents and clear study plans.
